He is the founder and curator behind HausaDictionary.com, HausaRadio.net, and HausaFilms.tv, projects focused on preserving, organizing, translating, and explaining Hausa language, news, film, and media for learners, researchers, diaspora audiences, and Hausa culture lovers.
Mahmud studied Information Systems at UMBC, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and also worked on web development projects for the UMBC Graduate School and the Division of Student Affairs. He later helped people find jobs online through iHire.com and now uses his background in technology, research, web publishing, AI tools, and Hausa-English translation for both professional work and long-term cultural preservation projects.
Mission
Mahmud's work centers on one broad mission:
To preserve, translate, organize, and explain Hausa language and media so that more people can access, learn from, and build upon Hausa cultural knowledge.
This includes dictionary entries, bilingual examples, Hausa news headlines, film archives, subtitles, transcripts, vocabulary notes, AI-assisted research workflows, and educational media projects.
Main projects
HausaDictionary.com is the main knowledge hub for Mahmud's Hausa-English work. It functions as a dictionary, archive, research notebook, and cultural knowledge base. The site includes Hausa-English vocabulary entries, example sentences, Qur'an-related language notes, media references, translation examples, and project pages. Highly inspired by:
- FrenchDictionary.com and SpanishDict.com
- Reverso and Context.Reverso.Net
- Wiktionary
The long-term goal is to make HausaDictionary.com a central resource for:
- Hausa-English translation
- Hausa vocabulary and example sentences
- Hausa media archiving
- Language-learning resources
- Research notes and source documentation
- Future AI-assisted Hausa tools such as HausaDictionary.ai and HausaTranslator.ai
- A deep analysis of the accuracy and intentional choices of the Arabic Quran translations especially in English and Hausa from human and AI/LLMs.
- Perhaps a WBW color-coded display and/or something like Tarteel and the parallel-text app Libera.
HausaRadio.net is a daily Hausa news and media archive project. It collects, translates, timestamps, and organizes Hausa headlines from broadcasters such as BBC Hausa, DW Hausa, RFI Hausa, and CRI Hausa. Highly inspired by
- NoA,
- news.kagi.com,
- Wikipedia's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Current_events, and others.
The project is especially useful for:
- Hausa learners
- Hausa-English translators
- Diaspora readers
- Researchers
- Journalists
- People who want quick bilingual access to Hausa-language news
Future possibilities include a Substack newsletter, podcast feed, sponsored Hausa media briefings, and possibly a 24/7 online Hausa radio stream.
HausaFilms.tv and HausaFilmsTV focus on Hausa film, entertainment, and media history. The goal is to preserve and organize Hausa film-related content while connecting it back to HausaDictionary.com as a searchable archive. Highly inspired by
- DramaWiki - D-Addicts https://wiki.d-addicts.com/ (utilizes MediaWiki instead my outdated version of DokuWiki)
