Global Financial Crisis Ruins Africa’s Mining Industry Africa has an abundance of minerals, and this is why mining is among the most important industries in Africa. But due to the severe impact the global financial crisis has had on the economy, the price of steel and similar goods has declined, which has ruined the mining industry in many African countries. The economy of the African continent is backwards by most standards, but many different kinds of minerals can still be found [on the continent]. In recent years—before the financial crisis broke out—the growth of the African economy had succeeded in reaching 5 percent due to the robust price of mineral resources. But now, because of the falling price of these materials, the mining industry throughout Africa finds itself in difficult circumstances. In order to protect their existence, some sites have already taken certain measures such as laying off employees in order to reduce costs. Others have striven to protect their activities by reducing work hours and doing away with vacation time. In addition, because of the damage caused by the financial crisis, the price of copper in global markets has begun to decline. Indeed, it has plummeted from about $8,000 USD per ton to about $3,000 USD per ton in only six months. This drop in the price of copper has brought serious trouble in Zambia which has been called a “copper mining empire.” Some Zambia experts believe that mines have not been able to earn much profit due to the depressed price of copper, and that mine owners are therefore having difficulty obtaining funds to mine new mineral deposits. Because of this, the stability of the copper mining [industry] has declined throughout the country, many mine workers have lost their jobs, and investors have pulled their funding due to a lack of confidence. Stagnation in the mining industry has also had a serious impact on the country of Congo-Kinshasa. Due to the reduction in total exports of mineral goods, the amount of income received by the government of Congo-Kinshasa appears to have dropped as well. As a result, the government has no choice but to postpone a multitude of public development projects it had planned. Moreover, as a result of the global financial crisis, the value of diamonds—which have always signified wealth—will be lower than in the past. Since October of last year, the global market demand for diamonds appears to have declined, and the price has gone down by nearly 30 percent as a result. |
