The People's Voice

A: My name is Alkali Baba Kura Imam. I’m Administrative Secretary for Turaki Aliyu Sale Bagare, Turaki of Kikau, Legacy 2007 candidate of the ANPP [All Nigerian Peoples Party] for the year two thousand and seven, God willing!

The reason we are here, we are supporting him here in Yobe under the ANPP banner among those four or five in this area who are seeking office. We see him as suitable, a gentleman, and he’s someone who is diligent, someone who can be trustworthy in this country of ours. And moreover, we really see now that he can provide leadership for the other candidates. They have been criticized a great deal, not just once or twice, but they haven’t done anything for their community, let alone be capable of running the country.

B: My name is Alhaji Shehu Mamman. Well, right now, the person I am supporting is Alhaji Aliyu Sani Bagare, Turaki of Tikau. Myself, from the position of Alhaji Shehu Mamman, the reason why I’m supporting Aliyu Sani Bagare is because of all the steps he has taken, and his knowledge, and the status that God has granted him for seven or eight years, we have seen how much he has done! We common people, we pray, we always appeal to God to help us and provide us with a good man, one who will help us and enrich us in the areas of health, farming, schooling, education. So that the country is in good health and we are happy. For us common people, we are always asking God to keep us in good health, that is the key to our advancement.

C: My name is Muhammadu Bello Arabi, Sardauna [Chief Prince]of Damataru. Most definitely, I am supporting Senator Usman Alabishir to become governor of Yobe. Specifically because there is a great deal of mistakes in the running of this state of ours. And on this I’m certain, that besides him there is no one can repair these mistakes, by the grace of God. When God brings us the coming year of two thousand and seven, may God be willing that it is Usman Alabishir whom we will elect in Yobe State to become governor.

D: I am Alhaji Giddi, and I come from Fane Local Government, in Yobe South, Zone B. The people of Zone C have been thinking a great deal, they’re thinking because they see that they’ve boarded a boat that will carry them toward the other side. This is why we are giving our support to Mamman Ali for governor of this state, and because we know that he is a compassionate man. I’m giving everything to help him pursue this office: my strength, and everything that I own, and all the insight that God gives to us. I am helping out with this campaign for the governor’s seat, which stands for justice in this state. The people know about the excellent policies that Mamman Ali has put forth and explained himself to the public.

E: Alhamdu lillahi [Thank God], my name is Baba Gana Haruna. And I’m a leader in this campaign of Senator Usman Albashir, specifically in the youth section. The reason we’re with Usman Albashir is because of all his steps and kindness. I think if he comes to be governor, if God is willing, the common people will be very happy indeed. So that’s why every youth must come out with no one left behind [break out of his egg with his lice] and throw their support behind Usman Albashir specifically in pursuit of Yobe State’s development.

F: I’m Alhaji Adamu K. Bazam. For me, beyond a doubt, my candidate is Senator Mamman B. Ali, from Yobe Zone B. I have lots of reasons for supporting him. Senator Mamman B. Ali, as everyone knows, since he went to the Senate seven years ago, has this elevated position of Senator. Well, alhamdu lillahi, it’s common knowledge that Mamman Ali possesses great insight … like when neighboring states heard about his struggles for our students and our belief that “whoever builds students, builds the community.” It is primarily for this reason that we’re supporting him. Secondly, during his time in the Senate he has shown himself to be very capable, deliberate and truthful, such that he was given the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, which is a very important committee. If he weren’t such an honest man, he wouldn’t have been given this committee that he’s been heading.

G: I am Ali Mai Sandari. I’m for the PDP [Peoples Democratic Party], and I’m supporting the candidate from 2003, Adamu Maina Waziri. Among the reasons I like him are: He’s worked hard for the PDP, he’s worked hard on taking care of people and a lot of other things, so that when the common man stands up, he will be able to stand tall, and see that he succeeds in these things. So, that’s my reason for wanting Adamu Maina Waziri.

H: Well, my name is Malam Ali Bukar, and I’m supporting Engineer Yakubu Bello, the 2007 National Democratic Party NDP candidate for governor, God-willing! And the reason why I’m supporting him is because he’s the only candidate from this area – his house is in Damaturu – and he knows about the problems of the common people, he’s close to them, he’s one of them. That’s why I’m supporting him.

I: My name is Malam Bulama Bakaneza. I’m supporting Yakubu Bello, the 2007 NDP candidate, God willing. All these candidates are the same; if you vote for one of them, you are not voting for a change.

J: My name is Suleiman Bawan Allah. In this race our candidate is Tijjani Musa Tumsa. He’s our candidate in Yobe State, and nearly everyone is backing him [grabbing his ladder]. He’s been a commissioner since the SDP era and during the military period. The way he helps people, the way he fulfills people’s needs: Whenever people have stood up and come forward about their problems, he has listened to them and understood them. He’s a trustworthy man. That is really one of the reasons that … one of the reasons that we want him to come and be our governor in 2007, may God permit.

In a culture where the general feeling is that politics is for men, it takes more than a political plan to run for a position in the public sector. Men are more inclined to go through the hardship of the battle than women, but in Nigeria, more and more women are getting involved in politics nowadays; six of the vice presidential candidates in the 2007 elections are women.

Personal qualities such as the righteousness, discipline, respect, and compassion attributed to Mamman Ali or Usman Alabishir are looked at with great respect. Performance, diligence, boldness, and patriotism have also been mentioned regarding candidates Bagare, Usman, Ali, Bello, and Waziri in order to emphasize their competence in tackling social and economic problems and improving infrastructure and living conditions.</eng-response>
