Umaru Musa Yar'adua government reaffirms the importance it gives to women's literacy in Nigeria, according to the Minister of State for Education Hajiya Aisha Jibril Dukku

A: The government of President Umar Musa Yar'Adua has reaffirmed the importance it places on women's education in Nigeria. The Minister of State in Nigeria's federal Minister of Education, Hajiya Aisha Jibril Dukku, explained this during the opening ceremony of an all-girls’ secondary school in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State.

She said that all governments must place a similar premium on girls’ education for the advancement of knowledge in the country and the benefit of the community as a whole.

B: In our northern region, we have this concern about girls’ education. And we… we know that nineteen out of thirty-six states must give the attention required, the attention to this problem that concerns them, and that is why a special department was established for this purpose. But the department won't be able to accomplish anything without… uh, the cooperation of our governors, of all of the northern states. Like when we came here and saw that Alhaji Mamuda Aliyu Shinkafi has done well, especially since he even has a primary school-- exclusively for girls.

A: “For that reason,” said minister Aisha, “it is important that state governments endorse Nigeria’s federal government in its efforts to implement equal opportunity in education, especially for girls; because, whenever one educates a girl, they also help develop national education as a whole.”

Notes

1. The Federal Republic of Nigeria is composed 36 states shared by various ethnic groups with three main languages: Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba, and English as the official language. Although Nigeria has had a national policy on education which involves all citizens, there is a gap between girls and boys in their access to education and a disparity between the predominantly Muslim north and the mostly Christian south in their commitment to western education. In northern states, and especially the conservative areas, where traditional practices and a general reluctance to accept western ideas and values preside, boys are given more opportunities to learn and study than girls. Early marriages, which generate income for families, and the misinterpretation of other cultures relegate females to a position where western education becomes inaccessible.

The Nigerian government strives to improve education and close the gap between northern states and southern states with initiatives that aim to equalize educational opportunities between genders by following international programs that aim to promote girls' formal education. UNICEF supports the government in this effort.

<note>1. Chickens live among the people, especially in the northern Nigerian cities of Zamfara and Kastina, but at the end of the day they go back to their cages. Hausa people make a living by raising chicken and selling them after they grow.

2. It is very difficult for people in these areas to get immediate medical assistance because of socio-economic conditions. Young women are often at risk due to the high cost of living, low incomes, increasing poverty and rising inflation. Thus, some turn to prostitution to earn money ands AIDS is very common among young men and women in the area.</note>
