A: If one considers the history of electoral politics in Nigeria, one could say that the country is now close to entering a troubling time, which will have the greatest influence on Nigeria’s future. Especially if one considers how affairs are now in the politics of friendship. And one will not be making a mistake if he asserts that the youth in Nigeria, especially those without means, are close to entering a time of killing each other and hurting each other, because they are being used; where disorder is taking over from discipline, they are being paid by some big political oppressors who have children in their houses, under their complete care. They have been sent to good schools, to grow up, and know their caregivers well, as if they were their parents. Those who throw the children of common people into a kind of political hooliganism like this:

[Aggressive shouting from a crowd of youths, indistinguishable]

Those were some young political hooligans fighting each other. Among the youth that I consulted about this matter was Malam Uba Sani, a youth advisor to the President. He said in his position as a teenager that he did not see fault in bringing a young person into political affairs. The fault was a young person getting into political matters with evil intentions, or in which he is being taken advantage of:

B: Yes, well, as you know … ah … politics in this country … are ruined … and the youth must persevere to take a hand in the affairs of … government, and in the affairs of politics, and in the affairs of commerce. Ah … the time has passed when the youth will sit by and let … the old folks do what they’re doing; we must take back --

A: So, what kind of steps do you want to take in politics?

B: Every time a politician comes out and says he’ll betray … ah … his rival, or sees that he can reign in those matters by which the public loses its lives and things, you’ll see that they take advantage of the youth. And they give them money … money of no consequence to break the law. There’s no talk of education, no talk of their future, no talk of their advancement, only talk of how they are to be made use of. So, I think the time has come for the youth to open their eyes and reflect on this. They should avoid those who try to use them. Every person who comes to them, they should ask him: “What’s this thing he’ll do to help them and also help this country?”

A: That was Malam Uba Sani, presidential advisor on current affairs. So, the youth who enter into political affairs with all their might, are advising their brothers to give up agreeing to be used, or lose their support.

Malam Yarima Usman Shettima, head of the Contact Organization for Northern Youth, as well as a leader of the DPP [Democratic Peoples Party], says they will confront every plot to take advantage of disadvantaged youth, to achieve bad political objectives.

C: Undoubtedly, there is preparation that we do, that is what we want, to enter into the whole of politics to be sure to say the key message, we searched for weapons, there were no youth who would become involved in politics, and they had treated them as slaves. Men who are older and been in politics for more than … thirty, forty years and older, they hadn’t been involved in politics until now, they are not retired, and they were there, despising the people of this country, they were up there in these circumstances, segregated and causing disharmony everywhere.

A: That was Malam Yarima Usman Shettima, a youth leader of the DPP.

Well, every time that they enter into a ruse, either in politics or ethnic violence, the youth use things like fuel or kerosene or petrol for burning. On this note, I consulted briefly with a young leader of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association (IMPA), Alhaji Abdurahman Yusuf Sullubawa, in the Kaduna region, which comprises northern and western states, as to what role they would play in suppressing this exploitative movement during this moment when the country would be entering a tense period of electoral politics. He said:

D: Well, if you pay attention to the plans that we are making now all together, we all have plans, we’ve told a lot of people, all the oil that you see being sold on the roadside, it’s not being sold in the market. Oil is made available just like how a cigarette seller comes and displays his wares on the roadside; so too, the oil seller comes and sets up to sell on the roadside. In the past, this kind of thing was illegal.

A: That was Alhaji Abdurahman Yusuf Sulubawa, a young leader of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association.

And then there’s a young seller of GSM (phone) cards, by the name of Dauda Abdullahi Rigasa, who calls on the youth to stop this business of political hooliganism and get real.

Circumstances in Nigeria have imposed a state of insecurity, constant struggle for economic survival, and reflection for a better future for young people. More and more young Nigerians are stepping out to play an active role in making changes, building a development-focused society rather than armies of religious, or ethnic fighters. They join organizations like the Information Society, and others like the "Alliance of Nigerian Youth," to raise awareness and the desire to take action among the youth. <eng-response>This is a series of interviews that reflects the harsh social and political circumstances faced by Nigerian youths nowadays. The journalist gives an account of the reality of daily life for a class of young Nigerians in a strong statement, supported further by concurring opinions from concerned young people. From civil servants, Uba Sani to a politician, Yarima Usman Shettima, a union member, Alhaji Abdurahaman Yusuf Sullubawa, then a small business owner, Dauda Abdullahi Rigasa, the common vision is a safer and productive Nigerian youth. Young people should be aware of the importance of their role in making progressive changes rather than engaging in violent activities that benefit only a few priviledged politicians, the speakers remarked.</eng-response>

<eng-response>According to the journalist and some young people in these interviews, the Nigerian youths face a critical turning point in the history of the country, since change is compulsory for a better future, along with their involvement. Politicians have turned a class of dispossessed young people into hooligans, the journalist explains with an example of a street scene. Some young people involved in actions that could change the situation, reiterate the unfairness of the practice, and also give their opinion on the role that Nigerian youths should be allowed to play politically and economically in the nation's interest.</eng-response>

<eng-response>As the journalist depicts it through these interviews, young Nigerians live in a hostile political and economic environment. He uses a strong tone in his introduction of the present situation and its impact on the future of youths and the country in general. His arguments are supported by speakers from different walks of life, who denounce the use of young people by unscrupulous politicians in order to destabilize the country. They reiterate the need for the youth to be conscientious of their position in the society, and the role they should play in solving the social, economic, and political problems it faces.</eng-response>
