The Position of Youths in The Recently Concluded Elections

  1. From my perspective as a young person, regarding the election that took place on 21 April [2007], I would say that what we had wasn’t an election. What happened was something different. This is why some think it would be better to return to the era of the traditional political system, or even colonial government, having decided that this country’s leaders have failed us.
  2. The gathering that was convened this Saturday did not qualify as an election, which transferred power from one elected government to another elected government. First of all, all the political parties and the states have committed massive fraud. In my opinion, the blame for this lies with the election commission, which failed to appear in public and assume responsibility for what happened, since it is supposed to be independent. But in fact, that’s not the case. And then the law enforcement authorities did not do the work that was required of them; instead, all they did was protect the current government. It’s true what they said: they just stood up and made a fuss that it was the opposition that was being fraudulent, but what the party in power did was much worse [“pass by the farm with the seeds”]. The members of the opposition failed to come together in a spirit of cooperation. Calling for demonstrations and boycotts will not lead to the annulment of the election, in spite of the complaints made by election monitors. But even if the election were annulled, this government must not again take the lead in conducting another election. We should establish a truly independent electoral commission whose members would not belong to any political party, or else we should establish an interim government to solve this problem. But achieving this depends largely on Nigerians. Redoing the election would cost this country a lot of money, and some opposition parties could not assume the financial burdenhemselves. This problem, in the short run, would be the establishment of a government with legitimacy problems to take over from that of President Obasanjo, and that would result in a failure to get anything done, except the continuing persecution of the opposition. In the long run, rigging elections would become part of our political culture because everyone who gets the opportunity to manipulate things in order to achieve his ambitions will do so, especially when we don’t agree with each other. The president will not trust the people and, in fact, he won’t trust himself. Those who are ruled over won’t accept those who are ruling them.
  3. It’s true that Nigeria is not Georgia, it’s not Ukraine, and it’s not Kenya. And despite the government’s attempts to implement the lessons that were exemplified in the recent events in Guinea-Conakry, the government is not always able to do so. We have learned nothing. This country was on the point of failure when Obasanjo came into office, and that’s just how he’ll leave the country, on the verge of failure.
  4. The truth is, Nigerians, especially those who are supporters of General Buhari, are not serious, and the ANPP [All Nigeria Peoples Party] did not do the campaigning that was needed, because in some southern states they didn’t endear themselves to the people, and even in Kano there weren’t sufficient images displaying their candidate. As for the AC [Action Congress] opposition, there was a problem with poor planning, since it was only a few days before the election that the candidacy status of the party leader Atiku Abubakar, Obasanjo’s vice-president from 1999 to 2007 was confirmed. His candidacy was the root cause of his fight with Obasanjo. This is why, as I see it, even if there wasn’t fraud involved, the PDP [People’s Democratic Party] could have won the election, because look at how they went out campaigning for the president and governors; but the greed for votes and showing a false lead were not going to produce a valid result [“a child with sight”]. The bickering that took place was so great that one might say that what happened in Nigeria was not quite an election; rather it was a simple process of appointing representatives and successors. From now on, the opposition must step up their efforts, because the illegitimacy of administrators could give rise to conflict. Then time must be taken to restore the laws that are stopping the work of finally repairing the road that has been started; that is, we should work to clean up the mistakes that have been made. There’s truth in the saying, you reap what you sow. Although democracy has been betrayed, we must support President Umar Musa ‘Yar adua’s victory, hoping that he will provide electricity and drinking water, no matter what.
  5. The flaw in this election was that it created for young people the impression that whatever they want, they should follow any method to get it. Our elders must sit down and resolve matters, and bring electricity and water to those who are suffering in today’s world; people must have adequate water in order to prosper. To get ahead, one needs to have fuel. And security should be given the importance it requires. Education and farming and industry should be encouraged. It’s a crime, this lack of progress, especially given the conflicts among teachers, workers, students, as well as anyone with influence. We have educated people who must volunteer themselves for the well being of others; to show us the way we should resolve this misfortune.
  6. Some scholars say it’s up to God, one can only pray. The truth is, the Nigerian commoner has no patience. His spirit has been broken due to the weakness of the critics. This is not something that someone should say he’s not up to. He has to come up with an objective, but people are not an objective, a political party is not an objective, land is not an objective. This is the real danger, that money has become the goal of our countrymen.
  7. On the other hand, the party in power has profited from the weakness of commoner and the lack of cooperation among the opposition, but by any measure it’s obvious that this election was not done right. And there’s the issue of legitimacy on the part of those who would inherit this government if we don’t change. We must listen to the complaints of the commoner.
  8. In spite of the situation we are in, we must avoid conflicts. We should listen to what our elders would say about this matter, not to begin infighting or lose the means of authority, but to resolve the problem by understanding each other.
  9. Truth begets truth, and we should become truth-tellers, so that we can find a real leader. Must we continue to live this way until 2011?

Rivalry and conflict over local and national resources have led to bitter inter-group fighting, and young men's strategies to combat social exclusion remain mostly individual. According to Fatoki Taiye Timmy, a young activist promoting the right of children and vulnerable groups, many eligible voters in Nigeria are no longer interested in voting or participating in the electoral processes as contestants simply because they have lost confidence in a system that is supposed to produce good leaders. Another reason is due to intimidation of opposing forces and parties by the government of the day.
