Antagonism Between Former Governor Alhaji Mohammed Makarfi and New Governor Namadi Sambo of Kaduna State

A: Nigeria has been awash in rumors about it for long time, but now that the rift between former Governor of Kaduna Ahmad Muhammad Makarfi and the new Governor Namadi Sambo has been made public, what can bring them together? Here is our Kaduna correspondent, Ibrahim Garba.

B: When the people on former Governor Makarfi’s side make accusations of corruption, they don’t make them about government contracts, since they don’t want to influence the politics of 2011 [when the presidential election is scheduled]. But those on Governor Sambo’s side accuse the former governor’s people of meddling, of trying to finding out what happened to them politically last year, this year, and [all the way] back to the civil war and also [accuse them of having] deep pockets. Well, does Makarfi’s side not know what these times are like? Alhaji Sirajo Musa Samaru is one of Makarfi’s supporters.

C: When Senator Ahmad Muhammad Makarfi was governor and brought on architect Muhammad Namadi Sambo, we respectfully told him that he was making a mistake, and that he has dug his own grave; we understood that when a political issue comes up, one must take on the role of a politician, not a contractor on whom someone has bestowed authority. The Honorable Senator Ahmad Muhammad Makarfi is a respected gentleman, not a child. So when those of us who are supporters of Senator Ahmad Muhammad Makarfi, who wish him well, saw the terrible things that were being done to him, we couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.

B: What sort of terrible things are you referring to?

C: Well, none of the community development plans had been undertaken yet, and since he was governor at the time, some political thugs blocked him and refused to let people see him for whatever reason, though no one got far enough to confront him. And others argued that Namadi would never do to them what the Honorable Senator had done.

B: But didn’t those on Governor Sambo’s side know that wisdom is born of experience? Alhaji Umar Gana is one of Governor Sambo’s associates.

D: Well, that’s just nonsense. What I know is that Makarfi isn’t the one who built up our State of Kaduna all by himself without thanks to God. Now Makarfi is something that God—the traitor that God made him into. Once he had settled in, he kept on cheating the people and relying on the people’s money that he embezzled through his corrupt practices. Look at our hospitals with no medicine during his time in office, our schools with no teachers, and our children reading outdoors.

B: All right, but, with all due respect, some people believe that the problems you describe haven’t changed and still exist today.

D: Hang on. You’re comparing a person who had eight years in office with a person who has had one and a half years? And, for God’s sake, if they say this, does that mean it’s true? Isn’t it just self-interest?

B: Others seem to believe that he was being betrayed the whole time. When he brought you into the government as his people, he—

D: No, not at all. Those of us who were there were never everyone's people; we were People’s Democratic Party people, being the ones who founded it. It was God that was bringing everyone together, and so we endured it. We actually wanted Professor Ango Abdullahi as our leader in Kaduna, not Namadi. Meanwhile, Makarfi wanted to make the governorship a governorship of smoke and mirrors. He came as an outsider, but he had the government in his hands. So, is Namadi a child? A man who’s approaching sixty years of age?

B: The public certainly hopes that these two sides will bury the hatchet for the greater good.

Ibrahim Ka-Almasi Garba, Voice of America, from Kaduna, Nigeria.

Notes

1. Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed Makarfi and Mohamed Namadi

Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed Makarfi is currently [2009] a Kaduna State Senator; he was the governor of the state from 1999 to 2007. The current governor is Mohamed Namadi. There have been tensions between the two administrations in Kaduna State, and both administrations have been blaming Kaduna State’s problems on each other; Namadi has also repeatedly accused Makarfi of undermining his administration.
