Voter registration is starting today in the Republic of Niger, God willing A: Today, God willing, the process of registering eligible voters will commence in the Republic of Niger, and for the first time, this exercise will be conducted door-to-door. Yesterday, the Council for National Affairs held a meeting under the leadership of the Deputy Prime Minister, Albade Abouba, who also serves as Interior Minister. The Deputy Prime Minister explained to Yusuf Mamman the steps that will be taken or have been taken to conduct registrations in the areas of Agadez and Diffa, which have been witnessing unrest. B: Our actions are on the part of the government, so a committee was established, and this committee is said to be independent, and we have been working with what it had planned. Notes
1. The 1884 Berlin conference and the fragmentation of the African continent by colonial powers to define their spheres of influence impacted the social, political, and cultural essence of the continent. In much of Africa and for its distinct ethnic groups, the extended family is the basic social unit. However, the creation of nation-states changed the traditional social structure and administrative system of thousands of ethnic groups. Although, most African countries retained the frontiers drawn by Europeans, from which ethnic groups, clans, kin groups, families were divided by national boundaries, loyalties to such groups are often stronger than loyalties to the state. In Niger, socio-economic circumstances have prompted conflicts in the northern and southeastern part of the country, and sometimes its neighbors are affected due to the extension of ethnic groups to their territory.
In the Agadez region, which is rich in minerals, northern desert armed rebels fight and demand more community investment and larger share of revenues from mining. The rebellion extends to neighboring Mali where the same ethnic group lives.
Conflicts between farmers and herders drawn to meager natural resources of water in the desert areas have disrupted communities and caused migrations like in the Diffa region where, the ”Mahamids”, an Arab community from neighboring Chad migrate with their cattle, engendering conflicts with the indigenous population. Some other ethnic and political tensions trouble the region.
