UNHCR Seeks a Solution for Millions of Refugees A report from the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) notes that, since the beginning of 1990, civil unrest and fighting has enveloped the Balkans, the Great Lakes Region of Africa, and the countries of Sudan, Chad, and Iraq. Millions of people have left their homes and become refugees. The majority flee to neighboring countries, where they are crowded together in border areas and rural refugee camps. Refugees not only have a negative impact on the environment, land quality, and employment dynamics in the areas where they congregate, but they also face difficult living conditions. Adults are unable to find employment, young children do not have the opportunity to attend school, and the refugees’ daily needs remain unfulfilled. Moreover, the dire conditions in refugee camps lead to many problems, including the outbreak of contagious diseases, the serious crime of weapons smuggling, and the kidnapping of children. The refugee crisis is a problem that the world has struggled with for a long time. At a conference being held today, Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Kayanza Peter Pinda presented an account of how his country was planning to confront this problem. In his presentation, he noted that the international community must pay more attention to refugee populations, and that the efforts being undertaken by countries that accept refugees must not be forgotten. Indeed, according to statistics provided by the UNHCR, it is developing countries that make the effort to accept the majority of the world’s refugees. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said that finding an appropriate solution to the refugee problem is a global responsibility. The international community must develop an equitable system for assuming responsibility and take steps to solve this problem accordingly. In addition, the UNHCR reiterated that helping refugees is a major responsibility for every country. The UNHCR also called on the international community to increase financial aid for improving refugee housing, to provide relief assistance in order to address the refugee problem on all fronts, and to find a solution to the refugee population crisis.
