The Fulani tribe is one of the many tribes in Africa. Its people are mostly found in the western parts of Africa. Originally described as nomadic herders, traders and farmers, the Fulani people are now found even in urban areas. There are varied opinions about their origins, and some experts believe they originated from Sene Gambia regions and that, over centuries, they migrated with their cattle, occupying vast areas of West Africa’s Sahel and savannah regions. The Fulani played a significant role in the rise and fall of ancient African empires in Ghana, Mali, Songhai and Mossi. They are also known to have contributed to the spread of Islam in West Africa. During the first part of the 19th century, the Fulani carved out two important emirs. One, based in Massina, for a time controlled Timbuktu. The other, centered in Sokoto, included the Hausa states and parts of Bornu (in Nigeria) and western Cameroon. The Fulani emir of Sokoto continued to rule over parts of northern Nigeria until the British conquest in 1903. http://www.jamtan.com/jamtan/fulani.cfm?chap=1 http://education.yahoo.com/reference/encyclopedia/entry/Fulani |

<eng-response>This report discusses the outcome of Nigerian government’s effort in the past years to promote Fulani education. Doctor Bappa Usman, a Fulani veterinary doctor, wrote several books to support the Fulani people in rural and urban areas of Nigeria. According to the doctor, his intention was to make them understand the need to take part in today’s society and to understand their own culture. Based on Ibrahim Garba’s interview with some of those who attended the launching of the books, there is support for Fulani education, and some of the youths interviewed urged that Fulani children be sent to school, especially those in Kaduna. Doctor Bappa concluded that a Western education will make them part of society.</eng-response>

<eng-response>According to this report by Ibrahim Garba, a Fulani veterinary doctor wrote five books in English and Fulani to encourage and support Fulani education in rural and urban areas. At the launch of the books, the reporter interviewed Doctor Tahir, one of the speakers, who described the Fulani people’s way of life as an amazing and different world rich in its own culture. Some of the Fulani youth interviewed by the reporter also supported Doctor Bappa Usman’s books and urged the Fulani population to send their children to school. Other speakers also supported the books, commenting that both the Fulani people and the non-Fulani will benefit from them.</eng-response>

<eng-response>According to this report, some years ago, the Nigerian government began an initiative to see that the Fulani population in Nigeria receives a Western education like every Nigerian citizen. A doctor supported the initiative by writing five books containing informative stories about Fulani culture and everyday life. Some of the speakers who attended the launch of the books praised the doctor’s efforts, and those interviewed by reporter Ibrahim Garba also supported the writer. The writer also stated the need for the Fulani people to go beyond cattle-rearing, and asked authorities to build schools for them in rural areas and to send teachers to help them.</eng-response>
