The Flux of Life: Heed Time, Don’t Waste It

Last week, we discussed the steps to success in life, the first of which is knowledge; the one following this is time. So this week we will have a discussion about time, which those who speak sensibly would say, it waits for no one.

Time in human life is an extremely important thing. Respecting it and paying attention to it is first among the key ingredients for strengthening a person’s life. Whereas showing carelessness towards it can bring about a retreat into the stagnation of human matters.

A person’s life takes place entirely in the circle of time, being that there is nothing that one can call time except three things: yesterday, today, and tomorrow – and their younger siblings: that is, just a second ago, right now, and in a little while. It is these things that always govern every other matter. If this is so, then indeed time is certainly number one among the various groups of life’s key ingredients.

In your position as a person who wants to succeed in life, the thing that you always need to use for getting strength in running your life is time. There is no special secret that you need, no powerful sorcerer that you can approach, no spirit or fetish that you can call on, and no lying down and lingering in bed. Not a one of them, much less two. The only thing you need is to make for yourself an excellent plan for using time appropriately. And once you make this plan, follow it exactly as you arranged; no pleasure, let alone skimping!

For example, don’t keep saying that you’ll leave for later that which you know you should do now. Don’t say let me leave it until tomorrow, when you know you can do it today. If you say that you’ll wait for another time, and do nothing now, then indeed you have failed the test. Time has passed you by. This will cause you to become miserable in life, because you will carry a lot of life’s debts.

You should now understand what is being implied by the foregoing explanation. Do you understand? Let me continue unraveling the matter for you. You know that you always have various needs in life, right? Then divide up your time into three portions each day: Morning, Afternoon, and Night. Set aside your morning needs and line them up on a schedule, divide them into portions, then choose the ones that you will do each day in the morning. If you are certain to do this, then you will have an easy time running your affairs. In brief, the thing that I’m suggesting here is this: that you become an organizer of your life.

Morning passes along and we come into the afternoon, right? Here as well, you should follow an organized schedule for your afternoon needs, and follow up on them one by one and do them in order. This way when evening catches up to you, you will have finished all of this.

The crucial thing is this: don’t restrict yourself, and don’t do too much or get lethargic. You know better than anyone the kind of strengths and needs you have. You know what you will be able to control, and you also know what can’t be obtained. The most important matter is this: you must understand that everything has its time, so you must put everything of yours in its proper place. If there’s something that needs doing now, don’t wait; and if it’s for tomorrow or beyond, then toss it there. When almighty God shows you the time, and helps you with the power to do something, then you should do it.

You don’t understand yet? Then follow me a bit further and carefully, let’s not make haste. Take a look at your condition, and see the kind of groups that there are within the population. If you look closely at this, it will help you to see the kind of needs that you have in life. Because people are different as to their exact needs and condition.

For example, a teenage boy is different from a householder. A school student is different from a worker. A woman who becomes a housewife is different from a young girl who is in school or a trade. Only you know yourself and your needs, and because of this you should divide them exactly according to how you will carry them out for the exact amount of time that you give each matter.

Let me continue by hitting you with some calculations: In your position as a person, you have a need for such activities as seeking knowledge, practicing your religion, work, occupation, leisure time, sleeping, eating, etc. Well, these are what I suggest you put in a schedule, and allocate to each activity its own time. Don’t change the time of one thing so it enters into that of another. You should be able to follow this arrangement, provided that you make a good arrangement, and you follow it precisely.

Something else that you should do is this: every night before you go to bed, put pen to paper and calculate the things that you arranged for yourself. Ask yourself, which ones did you do exactly at their times? Which ones did you have success carrying out, according to the great things that resulted? Well, if God brings us to another day, then you should do it again. This is how success will come to you, by respecting time, not wasting it!

You should always remember three things. First, yesterday goes by, and then you forget about it. Second, today we are in the midst of it, so go ahead and do what you have arranged in the midst of it in order to benefit your life. Third, tomorrow, will not come, unless you prepare for its arrival according to yesterday’s careful plans, in order to repair them for when tomorrow comes. If you do this, without a doubt, you will reap the rewards of time, for it is the major ingredient of running human life, and it doesn’t wait for anyone!

Our blessing upon entering the new month of sacred prayer [Ramadan]. God allows us to succeed from the blessings that are within him, amen. Be in good health!

Different people have different understanding of time and time management. Some believe “in general, sensible people know the importance of time.” Some religious groups like the Muslims believe that the two blessings that many people loose for doing good deeds are health and free time and that a Muslim ought to use ¾ of his time in prayers everyday. In some African countries, time is taken for granted and the only priority when it comes to time is during a festive activity. People believe that there is always enough time, and so other things can wait. Some intellectuals (economists) believe that time is the least understood of the three types of input (material goods, skills and time). To some life is influx and to others the flux of life and experience can never be superseded. One of the ways to maintain an eye on the flux of life could include the cultivation of a self critical awareness of our temperament attitudes, moods and preconceived ways of interpreting the world.

<eng-response>In this editorial Bashir Yahuza Malunfashi describes the importance of using our time wisely. Being organized by setting priorities on your daily activities and respecting them is a step to success in life. First identify your needs, as we all have different needs in life, and some of the most important ones include religion, sleep, work and food. He concluded that we will benefit from our time if we make yesterday our past, make the best use of today by fulfilling our commitments, and prepare for tomorrow by avoiding the mistakes of yesterday.</eng-response>
