Tidal launched a new Live feature, letting paid subscribers create a sharable listening session. This can be shared with a link, and other subscribers can join to listen to the session. The Tidal app will show Live sessions on its home page, both from friends and Tidal curators. In an interview with Nikkei Asia, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said he expects the company to release commercialized generative AI tools some time in 2023. According to data from the chipmaking equipment maker association SEMI, it expects Japan to increase its spending on chip fabrication equipment by 82% on the year in 2024 to $7 billion, the biggest annual increase in any market. Bleeping Computer confirmed that the IRS-authorized e-file software service provider eFile.com delivered a malicious JavaScript file since at least April 1st. The file prompted users to download a next stage payload. Researchers at MalwareHunterTeam say this paload contained a Windows backdoor that could eventually give full access to machines. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports Apple started its first round of layoffs since it began cost-cutting measures last year. The UK's telecomm and broadcasting regulator, Ofcom, said it found evidence that Amazon Web Service and Microsoft Azure make it difficult for customers to switch cloud providers and use multiple providers. Ofcom began investigating the cloud infrastructure market in October, and said ti will refer the market to the UK's Competition and Markets Authority for further investigation. The South Korean publication The Elec says TSMC did not send out Apple M2 wafers for package testing in January and February. It believes this is becauset Apple told it to stop production due to falling demand for MacBooks. TSMC reportedly resumed production in March, but at "only half the level of the previous year." This comes as Gartner analysts found overall PC shipments fell 16.2% in 2022. Germany's Federal Justice Office began a proceeding against Twitter under the country's Network Enforcement Act. This law requires responding to user reports of illegal content like hate speech within seven days. Germany's antitrust regulator designated Apple as a "company of paramount significance for competition across markets." The regulator previously said Alphabet and Meta fall under this designation. Motorola announced a flagship phone for Western markets, the Edge 40 Pro. It's largely the same as the X40 released in China late last year, with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, 165Hz screen, 125 watt wired charging and IP68 rated for water and dust. It comes to Europe "in the coming days" for 900 euros, then to Latin American markets. The Verge's Jon Porter passed on a report from Insider Gaming whose sources say Sony began development on a new PlyStation Handheld codenamed the Q Lite. This supposedly uses Remote Play with the PlayStation 5, not cloud gaming, able to stream games from the console at 1080p up to 60 frames per second. It also reportedly features an 8-inch screen and uses a control layout similar to the console controller. It's reportedly scheduled for release before the holiday 2024 season. Given reports of other Playstation hardware, like a PlayStation Pro, that have never materialized, Porter recommends taking this report "with a pinch of salt." https://insider-gaming.com/playstation-handheld/
On April 1st, Asus announced the ROG Ally, a handheld Windows 11 gaming PC in the same vein as the Steam Deck. Given the date, people weren't sure it was real, but Asus confirmed on Monday that the ROG Ally is indeed no joke. The Ally will use a customized AMD Ryzen APU, similar to the Steam Deck, rather than the AMD 6800U chipset used in other handheld PCs from Ayaneo or OneXPlayer. It will also feature a 7-inch 120Hz 1080p display able to hit up to 500 nits of brightness, with a dual fan system for quieter operations. According to a survey of teen useage of virtual reality by the investment firm Piper Sandler, 29% of surveyed teens owned a VR device. 4% used it daily, and 14% used it weekly. 7% of teenagers said they were interested in buying an upcoming headset, with 52% either unsure or uninterested. https://www.cnbc.com/2023/04/04/american-teens-not-into-virtual-reality-only-4percent-use-it-daily-.html
PayPal's Advanced Checkout integration can now accept Apple Pay payments from customers. Advanced Checkout allows merchants to create more personalized checkout experiences for their shops and already integrated support for Venmo, PayPal, and credit cards. In a paper published at the International Symposium on Computer Architecture, Google detailed performance of its 4th generation Tensor Processing Unit, or TPU. It used a 4000 TPU supercomputer connected with custom optical switches to train its PaLM large langauge model over 50 days. Google released an Windows app to bring its Nearby Share feature to the platform, enabling file transfers with Android devices over Wi-Fi. Australia's Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus issued an order banning the use and installation of TikTok on government devices, citing advice from intelligence and security agencies. Meta released its Segment Anything Model, or SAM and mask dataset. Segmentation is essential to computer vision, where AI models can identify which pixels in an image belong to a specific object. Meta says SAM can reduce the need for task-specific modeling, and can generate masks around objects its not previously processed. Microsoft released the $300 Surface Thundebolt 4 Dock, it's first dock to connect over Thunderbolt 4 rather than the Surface Connector. It features three Thunderbolt 4 over USB-C ports, three USB-A ports, a 2.5 gigabit per second Ethernet port, and a headphone jack. Nintendo updated its support site to now extends its free repairs of drifting Joy-Con controllers to the European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland. Kobo announced the Elipsa 2E, a $400 e-reader that includes the Kobo Stylus 2 for taking notes. It features a 300ppi 10.3-inch e-ink screen, a ComfortLight Pro feature to adjust its front light to reduce eye strain, and supports an optional magnetic SleepCover. Preorders are open now, shipping April 19th. Late last month, Google confirmed to Ars Technica that it instituted a 5 million file cap to Google Drive accounts, even for paid users. However Google now confirmed to the Verge that it rolled back that cap. It comes to Europe on April 20th, and will also eventually arrive in some Asian markets. No plans for a US release.
