| Zainab Babaji: Gwamnatin jihar Nasarawa ta gina makarantun horar da naƙasassu sana’o’i da ba su ingantaccen ilimi don su tallafa wa rayuwarsu. Gwamnan jihar Nasarawa Umaru Tanko Al-Makura ya shaida mana cewa naƙasassu na da gagaruman gudumawa da za su bayar wajen ci-gaba ƙasa da al’umma in har suka samu ilimi mai inganci.

Zainab Babaji: The Nasarawa State government has built schools for teaching disabled people trades and giving them a quality education in order to improve their lives. Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura explained to me that disabled people can make a huge contribution toward the progress of the nation and of the community if they are just given a quality education.

| Umaru Tanko Al-Makura: Ah, halin da muke ciki yanzu, Nasarawa, mun … mu … mu … mun buɗa makarantu guda uku na kulawa da naƙasassu a kowane shiyya na mazaɓan Sana … Sanata. Ah, na Lafiya za ya zamanto ita ce cibiya wanda za a fara ma yaro tun daga elementary har ya kai kusan zuwa university. Ko kai kurma ne, ko kai makaho ne, ko mai jujuta ne, ko wanda Inna ta sha shi ne, ko duk wani abinda kake da shi dai, na naƙasa wanda … ah … yaro ke samun wahala wurin gudanar da … ah … karatunsa a makaranta wanda aka yi shi na mutane marasa naƙasa, to mun kawo inda duk wanda yaronsa na da naƙasa ya kawo mana shi, bai zama yaronsa kuma, ya zamo to yaron gwamnati dai. Don Allah, za mu ba yaron nan ilimi, mu ba shi komai da komai, ba tare da mun ce iyayen ma su biya komai ba, don naƙasa ma kawai da Allah ya sa su ciki, wannan babban jin daɗi ne. To dole mu gwamnati mu ga mu yanda za mu tallafa ma wanda suka naƙasa kamar yanda muke taimaka ma wanda suke da cikakken lafiya.

Umaru Tanko Al-Makura: Um, currently in Nasarawa, we … we … we … we have opened three schools for the disabled within the area of each sen … senatorial district. Um, the one in Lafia will become the center where a child will go from elementary all the way until [they are] nearing university. Whether you are deaf, or you are blind, or you’re mentally ill, or you’re a person who was disabled by polio, or whatever disability that causes a child to have difficulty doing his studies in a school that was made for people without disabilities, we have reached a point where anyone who has a disabled child and brings him [the child] to us, he doesn’t become his child; he becomes the child of the government. Because of God, we will give this child an education. We will give him everything without telling the parents to pay anything, because for those who God alone gave a disability, it is a major source of happiness. So, the government must see to it that we help those with disabilities just like we help those who have complete health.

Zainab Babaji: That was Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura. The president of the Nasarawa branch of the Nigerian Association of the Blind, President Oloshu, said that he recently completed his second degree at the university. He believes that giving an education to the disabled will help them to become self-reliant.

| Shugaba Oloshu: Wai ya nuna gwamnatin na jiharmu ta kula da mu. Sa’annan kuma, zai kawo mana zaman kai da kai … ah … saboda … ah … irin wannan takan ba mu ƙarfin gwiwa da cewa za mu iya … za mu shiga yin komai … da … ah … da kanmu da kanmu. Ba tare da taimakon wani ba, za mu iya yi. Illolin bara na dayawa. Ga raini. Ga su hatsururuka. Ubangiji ya ta … ya taimaka na yi makaranta zuwa digiri na biyu. Ah yanzu, babu aiki. Muna sa ido ga Ubangiji da kuma gwamnati da za su taimaka su samu mana aikin yi.

President Oloshu: So, it shows that our state government cares about us. Also, it will provide us with independence, um … because … um … this type of thing strengthens us [in our resolve] so that we will be able … we will start to do everything … for … um … for ourselves. Without help from anyone, we will be able to do [things]. Begging has many ill-effects. There is disrespect. There are dangers. The Lord has … has helped me to complete school through a second degree. Um, currently, I don’t have work. We are looking to the Lord and the government to help us and provide us with work.
