Presidential Candidate A: In other words, what I should say about this is: in the election for Vice-President, he has a real opportunity. You know, don’t forget this: there is one political party that is inviting him to come, and they will give him their ticket for the presidential candidate, if he needs to do it this way. You are aware that this past week, the court here in Abuja ruled that his dismissal from the PDP [People’s Democratic Party], snatching away his opportunity and his rights, was both illegal and unconstitutional. Because of this, everything was restored to him. And as we expected, the PDP and the law have been known to have taken separate paths in the past. They have previously parted ways because it’s not a party that’s interested in following the law. It’s fully intoxicated by power on account of its strength. B: Mmm… A: Thus, they have no doubt regarding … ah … the standing competition. So until now they hadn’t sought the Vice-President on this judgment that the court handed down. Because of this, we are merely watching events unfold -- B: Mmm … A: -- but they didn’t … well … God knows, there are steps that the Vice-President would take which we will hear about within a week. B: So, Alhaji Garba Shehu, there are rumors that President Obasanjo and the PDP bigwigs reached an agreement some time ago that they would pick Governor of Katsina Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as their candidate. There are those who say that, if this is so, this step defeats the influence that Vice-President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had on the PDP faction known as the PDM [People’s Democratic Movement] from the outset. What is … ah … your opinion about this claim that the public is making? A: Well, the first thing is this: the Governor of Katsina himself … ah … Honorable Umaru Yar’Adua, claims that he isn’t in this PDM faction of PDP, he says it does not belong to the PDM. As the most populous country in Africa, Nigeria is also one of the most corrupt countries in the world and this has been most damaging in terms of politics and elections. The country is also known for violence, and in most of its elections there have been issues of delays in ballots. Politicians especially at the highest position are mostly corrupt, making fortunes out of the country's resources. Among attempts in trying to fight corruption is the creation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a commission which the Nigerian public claims only works to the advantage of the president-convicting mainly his political opponents. Usually there is little or nothing that can be done when powerful politicians decide on who would be elected president, because the law makes them immune from being prosecuted.
