Birds of The Same Feather Obasanjo and Atiku: Birds of a Feather Flock Together A friend of mine, a new politician who had been bothered by the meddlesomeness of politics, came over and said that he had never seen as dynamic a politician as the Turaki of Adamawa. Then he went on to say, “You have to admit that the country’s great Vice President should be given the position that was given to the Sardauna of Sokoto, because there is no other advocate for the North like him.” Though he had been talking for nearly a half hour, I said nothing. Then he said, “Here I am talking, and you’ve been quiet – have you nothing to say to me?” I was momentarily at a loss for words, and then I said that I thought Atiku and Obasanjo were birds of a feather, because on the surface, there was no difference between them. Suddenly, he became upset and openly showed his anger. So I said, “don’t get angry, you must explain yourself to me so that I can learn to tell them apart”, and I went on to inform him that at times, in my opinion Obasanjo is often better than Atiku. These words really angered him, and he left my place and went on his way. I really meant it, because there’s no discernible difference between Obasanjo and Atiku, as far as I’m concerned. Those times that I’ve thought a lot about it, I would consider Obasanjo to be a hundred times better than Atiku. Quite a few people are very surprised when I say this in front of them, because in their opinion, there is no villain in this world who has done more harm to them than Obasanjo. So be it, but what I am saying is this: whatever fault you find in Obasanjo, you’ll also find in his vice president, Atiku. This is why Obasanjo himself was unable to fire him from his position as Vice President, because they both gave their word, and acted together in whatever kind of dirty trick it was that they were engaged. I’ve heard the Vice President and many of his supporters say that the reason for the first quarrel between him and his master, Obasanjo, was about extending their term of office, This is why some people consider it to have been the Turaki of Adamawa who silenced the talks about term extension in the legislature, but I have always said it wasn’t him. This is because anyone who witnessed the death of the third term effort knows that it is the common people themselves who dealt decisively with this talk of extension through prayers and riots. I personally witnessed a gentleman legislator who had to defend himself with difficulty after his constituency blamed him for backing the extension. And a great number of common people prevented their representatives from sleeping in peace because they did not do enough to defeat the extension in their legislature. This is why I refuse to believe that the Vice President has fought the term extensions. If he had wanted to truly fight the 3rd term agenda, he could have toppled Obasanjo from his position, since his supporters said he held a majority in the legislature. Moreover, when he called for mass opposition in a radio interview during a visit to the United States, the masses would have listened and done what he asked, but they did not. Such as it was, no one would trick us by saying that it was Atiku who fought against extending terms of office. Those who think that the Turaki of Adamawa is an advocate for the country and northern Nigeria; I say categorically that he is not, because as the Hausa say, “Whoever says he’ll give you a gown, look at the one he is wearing.” There is nothing beneficial that the Turaki has done for people of the north; he has benefited from dividing the North up with Obasanjo. They did it with the money of the common people of Nigeria. Obasanjo is even better, because, on his farm in Ota, you can find around five thousand people who are working for farm wages, and they are paid there. But the Sardauna of Ganye doesn’t even have a garden plot that a commoner could irrigate and get paid for working in the garden at Ganye or Jada, let alone in his own state of Adamawa. Every time that you try to speak to someone who has never been to Adamawa State, he will tell you the Vice President built a university there. There are also some who believe that he tried to get the federal government to undertake some projects in the state. But that’s not the way things are. This university that the Turaki of Adamawa allegedly established in his own state is a university that the commoner -- who can’t put his children in a government school-- , can afford, let alone those who depend on themselves to survive. This is a (private) university, where every poor person you see working is either a gardener, a watchman and or a simple laborer, and the commoner gains no benefit from this university, or from the company that opened it. It is not a place where the commoner might find something to do, or take some benefits from the large amount of money that it spent, which no one can utilize except someone whose wealth is in dollars, not naira. In my opinion, if the Vice President has the patriotism in his heart to bring the country forward, the signs would have been seen in his own state of Adamawa. Because of the extreme obedience that the Adamawa State governor gives to him, there is nothing that could be done in the state without Atiku knowing about it. But the embarrassing and frustrating thing is this: Adamawa State, after nearly eight years of civilian rule, continues to be the least developed. There’s nothing to write home about on the ground. Then the excuse from Atiku’s men never goes beyond saying, that he was not on good terms with the president, this is why he was unable to do very much. Then the question here is this: for three years he’s been content and comfortable inside the Aso Rock (presidential mansion.) Nothing prevented him from performing, and no one pushed him into fighting Obasanjo after proclaiming to the country and the world that his intentions and Obasanjo’s were the same. And it’s the Turaki of Adamawa who went out and proclaimed to the world that no one was going to stop him from increasing fuel prices that he and Obasanjo were treating as their own personal source of wealth... So too, whatever assets Nigeria owned, he and Obasanjo sold to themselves in the name of privatization. It’s not necessary for those who share my friend’s opinion to keep on regarding Atiku Abubakar as a patriotic Nigerian who advocates democracy, because there’s no advocate of democracy who will support him or help to rig an election. Publicly, everyone knows how the 2003 election turned out, and every Nigerian also knows that. No one played a greater role in manipulating that election like the Turaki of Adamawa. This is why I am maintaining my stand that it’s not appropriate to call him an advocate of democracy. Everyone who knows the kind of people who return to the Vice President’s AC party knows that these kinds of people have always been a problem for Nigeria, because they are people who, when they finish doing what they did in the PDP party, and it breaks off relations with them, then they go outside and rescue themselves by pretending to be fighting for the liberation of the North. This is a tall tale, because all of them, at one time or another held an important position in Obasanjo’s government, and there’s not one of them who left his position on account of the common person, only for being together with Obasanjo. Everyone who returned is insulting him and also making excuses in the name of the common people. However, what my friend must understand is this: even the common people of the North have started to understand how the game is played. No one will come again to steal their money and then treat them like his slaves, by means of deceiving them and appearing to fight for their freedom when the time to do that is long over For me, if my friend wants me to believe that Atiku is a true politician, that he’s fighting Obasanjo on behalf of the North’s poor, and not because he himself wants a taste of the presidency, he must come clean with us about his true role in the 2003 elections. And he must also tell us the truth about our property and what he and Obasanjo did with it. We who came from the same state must hear what he and his errand boy Boni did to our state. He should also just abandon his ambitions of becoming president, since there’s not much difference between him and the current president. |

Described as a grim reality, the Nigerian people believe Obasanjo and Atiku are stuck together. The best person to tell the society about Obasanjo is Atiku and Atiku is the best to tell about Obasanjo. Atiku could not quit his position for fear of what Obasanjo might do to him while Obasanjo cannot fire him because his deputy has just enough power to hang onto his office. Some Nigerians also believe that both have had their days. They need to quit the political stage and let other politicians take over. Atiku is also described as a powerful Vice President, more powerful than Obasanjo in 1999 when he did not have any political structure (being out of prison), depended on Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida's (Nigeria's former president) military machine and Atiku's part PDM (Progressive Democratic Movement), to come to power. While Obasanjo was traveling around the world courting the international community, it is also said that he put Atiku in charge of privatizing Nigerian assets and in charge of all governors among other responsibilities. http://www.vanguardngr.com/articles/2002/politics/april07/20042007/p320042007.html http://www.lagosstate.com/ http://www.pambazuka.org/en/category/panafrican/33679 |

<eng-response>According to the author of this publication, the President Obasanjo and his Vice President Atiku are like two sides of a coin and none of them is good enough to rule the country fairly. If left to choose, the author believes Obasanjo is a better choice because he significantly helped average or lower class Nigerians with his farm by employing as many as 5000 workers. Atiku, on the other hand built a school in his state basically for those with wealth that was not fairly earned. The author, like most Nigerians, believes that the President Obasanjo will be a good leader for the North if his vice president Atiku had given him a chance.</eng-response>

<eng-response>Comparing President Obasanjo and his deputy Atiku, it is clear that they both had personal motives for being where they are. They are mainly concerned about their selfish interest rather than serving Nigeria. In this publication, Atiku claims that his recent misunderstanding with President Obasanjo was because he resisted the President's attempt for being the Nigerian President for the third term, but in reality it was the Nigerian people who fought against Obasanjo's intentions. The only way Atiku could earn back his respect and trust from the public is by showing that he is honest and by fighting with Obasanjo for the interest of the poor Nigerians. He should go before them, explain what they did with Nigeria's wealth and defend himself regarding the 2003 election. Both leaders were involved in the election process.</eng-response>
<eng-fdbk>This is not correct because the text did not provide a solution for the Vice President to earn public respect. Think about what the author would consider a valid argument against his own viewpoint?</eng-fdbk>

<eng-response>This publication discusses the author's argument against his friend and some Nigerians who support and believe that the Vice President of Nigeria is a better political leader than the President. According to the author, Atiku and his President are birds of the same feather because they are both guilty of possessing Nigeria's wealth, increasing gas prices in Nigeria, and for the involvement in the rigging that went on in the 2003 election. During their first three years in office, they shared the same goal and interest of controlling the country for their own interest. The author concluded that politicians who left PDP for Atiku's AC party have been a problem for Nigeria because they left after doing what was in their best interest.</eng-response>
