Officials confirm discovery of the avian influenza virus in the states of Katsina and Zamfara in northern Nigeria

On Monday, Nigeria confirmed that tests carried out on poultry from two states and the city of Abuja have confirmed the presence of the deadly H5N1 avian influenza virus.

The Voice of America correspondent in Abuja notes that Nigerian Information Minister Frank Nweke told journalists this past Monday that the presence of avian flu has now been confirmed in the states of Katsina and Zamfara, as well as in the capital city of Abuja. He said that tests carried out on poultry from 7 other states had shown that they had not contracted the avian influenza virus.

In addition, Nigeria is making plans to purchase 250,000 doses of antiviral drugs in an effort to allay public fears that an epidemic could break out if humans contracted the virus.

In its current form, the H5N1 virus can only be transmitted from the carcasses of chickens or birds that have the disease; it cannot be contracted from person to person.

Dr. Ahmed Nasidi, a senior Health Ministry official, said that President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration is doing an excellent job handling the situation. Dr. Nasidi said, “Considering the capability of this country and the fact that the President himself is involved in this effort, even our neighbors in the region have said that Nigeria has really acted quickly. Of course, it is an unfortunate thing, because Africa has never faced this kind of epidemic before. This is the first time, so we were not as prepared as the South Asian countries that have faced this kind of epidemic in the past and knew the most appropriate steps to take.”

Meanwhile, an epidemiologist from the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization told reporters in Kano that Africans were less susceptible to avian influenza than Asians. The reason, he said, is that in Asia there are many more chickens that are tended or that live among people.

But UN health officials fear that the virus might take hold in Africa's heavily-populated cities, where the immune systems of many people are compromised due to AIDS or malnutrition.
