Differences Between Abacha's and Obasanjo's Children It’s been nearly a year since President Obasanjo’s children started seeing their photos on the front pages of the country’s newspapers, despite the inappropriateness of such publications. From the time of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa’s administration up to the present, we have never had a president whose children kept on bursting in on the affairs of our lives like Obasanjo’s children. Don’t even compare them to the children of General Abacha whom Obasanjo continues pursuing to this day. Among Obasanjo’s children, you find one who escorts a presidential candidate to buy the registration forms while his other children are inaugurating Goodluck Jonathan to the position of vice presidential candidate in order to receive a substantial payoff. Even if we assume that Abacha’s children are making business deals worth billions of naira, at least none among them has ever acted recklessly enough to inaugurate a candidate for president or vice president. Business wise, everything that Abacha’s children did, those of Obasanjo did as well. Today you see Obasanjo’s children are helping Virgin Airlines become established in Nigeria, then buying huge houses and properties in the U.S., then owning oil shares in cooperation with their so-called financial partners. But unlike their father, Obasanjo’s children understand that their father’s term is coming to an end, and so we no longer hear much news about most of them. But today, I’m more concerned about his eldest daughter, the one named Doctor Iyabo Obasanjo. She held the position of commissioner in the government of Gbenga Daniel, the governor that Obasanjo had hand-picked on behalf of the people in his home state. And Governor Gbenga Daniel then appointed her commissioner to show Obasanjo his thanks for hastening him to the governor’s seat. The Hausa have a saying: Repaying a debt is like a large ebony calabash of sweet drink. On her part, this Iyabo, soon after receiving a gift of the position of commissioner, she took off the cloak of modesty and started putting on airs. Before long, Iyabo set her sights on a seat in the Senate for the district that she came from. What a modern girl, this Iyabo! It was not surprising that she thought of mounting a campaign for a seat in the Senate, especially given that her father Obasanjo had given the position of Senate president to someone who didn’t win the senatorial election; so you see what an easy thing it is for Iyabo to join the Senate? Iyabo’s thinking was that if she were victorious in the 2007 election, she would become Senate president, because by all indications, the Senate president would be chosen from the western states. Obasanjo had already allocated the chairmanship of the board of party elders to his region, a position that he had saved for himself once he stepped down from the presidency. And it is this Iyabo that I have been speaking about who has bulldozed her way into ministerial meetings where she had no business being. Abacha’s children never did this. And so, one day, she heard the news that the person who had played a role in building the Guaranty Trust Bank, by the name of Fola Adeola, was also seeking the Senate seat that Iyabo was after. Well, at once Iyabo was upset and started babbling like someone delirious with a fever. In an interview she had with The Sun newspaper last year, she kept on mentioning that it’s a nasty trick for anyone to try to snatch the Senate seat from her. That is, it was she who suffered to seek the legislative seat; as such she’s the only one who deserves to be senator and no one else. In the interview that she did, she kept on using threatening words that showed she was speaking about Fola Adeola. Iyabo kept doing things like spoiled children tend to do when someone snatched away a little toy that they had been playing with. And how one achieved the objective, nobody cared! Suddenly we heard that the president had fired Fola from his position as executive managing director of Transcorp and also from the chairmanship of the Pensions Commission of Nigeria. With this, they undercut his quest for the Senate. This was how Obasanjo secured the senatorial seat for his daughter, thereby putting her on her way to becoming Senate president. So how does the name of someone this powerful ever appear on the list that the EFCC dogs might be after? Even if her name appeared there like those of Governor Segun Agagu, Senator Ibrahim Mantu and other ardent supporters of Obasanjo, the president would simply have her name removed. Briefly, all other candidates were thus intimidated enough to withdraw from seeking the senatorial ticket for Ogun’s Central zone But then along came a brave man who cannot be easily intimidated named Lanre Tejuoso, a blood relation to the chiefdom of Egbaland, to show Iyabo her limits, and appearing under the banner of ANPP [All Nigeria Peoples Party]. Lanre exceeded her in supporters by one hundred percent. For her, besides Daddy, who wanted her? Three weeks later and in the middle of the night some gun-totting strangers paid him a visit at the hotel where he was staying in Abeokuta. After they exchanged greetings, they introduced themselves to as “hired guns,” Are you following me, my dear readers? The killers were speaking in Yoruba language. In fear, Lanre brought two million Naira and gave it to them, since he was under the impression that they were armed robbers. Then they said to Lanre, why would he begrudge them their status? Like most Presidents in Africa, the children of the Nigerian Presidents are believed to have the right to enjoy their father's tenure by doing whatever they want in the society without being penalized. Abacha ruled in 1993 and died unexpectedly of a heart attack in 1998 according to a Nigerian official report. He was replaced by Abdusalam Abubakar who was succeeded by Obasanjo, a former Abacha detainee. Like Obasanjo, Abacha had many children and his oldest son Mohamed was arrested by Obasanjo's government in 1999 on charges of fraud, money laundering and embezzlement. A deal between the government and his family was later made to drop all charges against him if they return 80% of their liquid assets. Obasanjo was a career soldier before serving twice as Nigeria's head of State, once as a military ruler and once since 1999 as an elected President. He has children throughout Nigeria, United Kingdom and the United States.
