Vice Presidential Candidate

[Brief sound clip of traditional Hausa music, fading out soon after speaker A begins] A: So, do you understand by which route you would help to develop the community, if God grants victory to this party? Being that it’s not you who would become the President, what role would you play in the position of Vice-President toward achieving community development, especially for women who are seeing their rights being trampled? B: Hajiya, may God be willing. If indeed the Lord God grants us victory, we will establish a government. “Bi’izinillahi ta’ala [Arabic],” we will sit down and examine matters in the country. We won’t say that we’re going to pass ahead of men; it wouldn’t be possible. We say [inaudible]. The man, in the religion of Islam, is the one who guides the woman. We will help each other. There are many places where women could be helpful. Nowadays, Hajiya, you see some countries in the world -- A: Mmm … B: -- where you will see women participating in the business affairs of cottage industries. Our women do farming. Our women do hospital work. Our women do all sorts of things, but they don’t get support because they don’t have economic power. They don’t have money. A: Mmm … B: It is this lack of money that brings them to their knees. But we are in God’s power, when God permits us to arrive at victory. Then women in Nigeria will wipe away their tears and stop crying. Why? Because we will stand firm to support their progress and help them, in exact proportion to their position, where both religions, Islam and Christianity, determine their potential. A: Alright then, Hajiya, there are some who see women going into the messy affairs of politics and say, it’s not appropriate for women. What would you say about this? B: Most people make politics out to be something dirty to look at. Because of this, even among men, only those who are seen as fools, those who are shamelessly disgraced, participate in politics. In the past, it’s the very reason he undertook it. But now, teachers of Christianity and teachers of Islam have been providing a lot of commentary and discourse, telling people that there’s no way to differentiate religion and politics. They go together. Because of this, it now happens that good people are arising from their slumber. How will we forge ahead to address our matters when there are so many useless people around, and no good people? But now things have changed. This change that’s occurring is good people who would stand up and make themselves known. As they emerge, we extend the country’s reins of power into their hands. They go about things with the fear of God and compassion in their heart, and you know that you will return to your Creator. You will go and stand before the Lord, and he will ask you how you did such-and-such. Well, if you have the fear of God, if you have compassion in your heart, then you will speak the truth. And you will help the public. Because of this, now is the time that good people will emerge, and they have begun to emerge. Praise be to God! A: Do you know what your party will do differently from the PDP [People’s Democratic Party], and do you know, if God grants you victory, what you will do to bring changes to Nigerians? B: Indeed, praise be to God! Hajiya, in life, each of us is a creature of God. There is something that everyone needs, from dawn to night, there is something that everyone needs: water. In Nigeria, Hajiya, the common man is in crisis. Water, clean water that is a gift from God, is beyond the public’s reach. There’s no water. If you take notice of this water, it will help a backwards place, some in … if a man uses murky water, you see? He will become ill, whether from either cholera or some other disease that … ah … that is related to dirty water. So then he would go to the hospital. But where is the medicine at the hospital? Because of this, if we were to provide the public with clean drinking water, then beyond water, one would come and give a talk, and the man would find something to do to support himself. Hajiya, it’s not possible to say that every Nigerian could have a government job. It’s not possible. A: Mmm … B: Of all the many different topics one could touch on, would all of us become … professors with Ph.D.s? It wouldn’t be possible. –(((()))) B: -- … he comes, and receives training. He learns a skill by which, when he finishes Primary, he would support himself to get ahead until the end of his days. Another is in Secondary, and he too would advance and go on … Wherever he goes, he would attend university. Because of this, you see, little by little, we would manage our affairs. Then, after this, every Nigerian would be free to find something to do. The third thing is finding somewhere to live. We don’t agree that one man should own fifty houses when innumerable souls have nowhere to sleep. If they are placed in a boarding house, you will see … thirty people in one place, with no room to spare. Each morning they arise and form a line, using bags for a toilet. Number three is finding somewhere to live; a person goes out in the morning to look for food, he has trouble and returns home at night, he has … only good health and security, and lives as one who rests at his house with his door open. What would bring this about: because he finds something to do, when people have something to do, do they become thieves? Do you have nothing to do late at night but to come and rob people? Well, we now have a government that will give you something to do, and the issue of theft has gone away. You turn in at night and go to sleep; in the morning you go to your job, and can even leave your door open. After this, we should come to speak about looking after one’s health. If you’re not feeling well when you go to school, you won’t be able to read. You read … and you get sick. So after we do this to make people healthy, then let’s come and teach them to read. Then if you teach someone he will understand and take it up until he can benefit from it. A: So, may God provide to the Nigerian people leaders who will fulfill their promises to strengthen family life and community development. That is our program for today; next week, when the Almighty brings us together again, we will return with a new program. For now, we thank our guest, Hajiya Maryam Ibrahim Baba, candidate for the position of Vice-President with Orji Kalu, who is seeking the presidency of Nigeria under the PDP banner. [Brief sound clip of traditional Hausa music, fading in over speaker A’s conclusion] And to Julie Gresham who helped arrange this program, this is Grace Alheri Abdu, wishing all of us the best. Peace be with you.

Religion and customs do not facilitate the life of Nigerian women, like most African women in a prevailing, male-dominated society. They sometimes watch their rights being ignored or discriminated against because religion or custom have relegated them to positions that resemble slavery to the point that they have no control over their own bodies. In the course of history, many brave women have participated effectively in the development of Nigeria. Gradually, they are advancing to higher positions and competing with men. There are matriarchs in some ethnic groups, or leaders in a traditional context but in general, they have to struggle more for some autonomy. They form organizations to help themselves.
