Kenya Developing Domestic Tourist Markets to Combat the Financial Crisis Is the Kenyan tourism industry, which has attracted so many foreign tourists, in trouble as a result of domestic unrest and the global financial crisis? In any case, the Kenyan Ministry of Tourism has been using a unique strategy to actively develop domestic tourist markets as a way to offset the negative effects brought on by a decline in the number of foreign tourists. The tourism industry is a very important business in Kenya, and it is a leading industry in providing income for the country. In 2007, the income that Kenya received from the tourism sector reached $1 billion. But toward the end of 2007, there was unrest during the Kenyan presidential election. As a result, one by one, the Western countries announced regulations curbing tourism, which brought about a decline in the number of tourists from many countries. According to available statistics, in the first half of 2008, the number of foreign travelers to Kenya and the income that Kenya received from the tourism industry fell by more than 30%. Just as the unrest was brought to an end and the Kenyan tourism industry was starting to rebound, the financial crisis broke out. Given these circumstances, the Kenyan Ministry of Tourism began to focus on the country’s own residents. As the head of Kenya’s domestic tourism board explained, the board determined that the country’s residents could benefit the Kenyan tourism industry just as foreign tourists had. According to Kenyan news reports, many people living in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and other major cities had the means to pay for at least $26 a day in tourist accommodations. Therefore, Kenya’s domestic tourism board began arranging for a multitude of tourism companies to introduce inexpensive travel routes to important tourist sites, including Lake Nakuru National Park, Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate National Park, the coastal city of Malindi, and others, and to truly gain the acceptance of local youths. And so, the head of Kenya’s domestic tourism board called on tourism companies that had been on the brink of shutting down to begin actively developing domestic tourism markets. Still, there have been some problems developing domestic markets. For a long time, the Kenyan public has seen tourism as a very expensive activity and the exclusive domain of the wealthy, and this is why the most important thing is to find a way to change their opinion. Kenya is in eastern Africa and is one of the world’s leading tourist destinations. |

Notes
1. Tourism in Kenya
Located in East Central Africa, Kenya is one of the most attractive tourist destinations on the continent for both Africans and non-Africans. It is on the coast of the Indian Ocean, and some of its attractions include Mt. Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa, after Mt. Kilimanjaro, islands, and resorts. Its terrain and climate vary from the arid north to the fertile Lake Victoria Basin in the southwest and from the western highlands to the coast. Despite its economic decline and political instability, Kenya continues to be one of the most successful countries in Africa.
