Chapter 2: Topic on His (SAW) dealings with children

Islam came with a real criterion for the father-son relationship. This criterion hinges on mercy, compassion, sympathy, coaching and proper care for the children in every aspect of their lives. The father is always the fortress they resort to at every time. For this reason the Qur‘an immortalized this relation through the word of Luqman ―the wise man‖ to his son, guiding and coaching him, ―Luqman said to his son, counseling him, „My son, do not associate anything with Allah. Associating others with Him is a great injustice.‟” (TMQ, 31:13)...

In addition, the Prophet (SAWS) legislated emotional attention and care for the child by being dutiful and merciful to him, by playing with him and making him happy. We previously mentioned how the Prophet (SAWS) used to deal with children. He also legislated educating them scientifically and spiritually, respecting them, encouraging them to be truthful, being careful about who they befriend, calling Allah for them. All of this in addition to caring for their behavior, their attitude and their social wellbeing! With all this children can adapt well with their social milieu without any repercussions.

My 2024-02-01 reflection on Luqman's advice on not committing shirk in this day and age or associating anyone with Allah ties to the currently persisting concept of shukr (gratitude)... or more specifically, since today is Friday, the theme of the 2 companions with gardens... not attributing the good and success one has to Allah is a grave mistake. Also related and embedded in that story was one of the most humbling ayats to me in the Quran:

  1. His ˹believing˺ companion replied, while conversing with him, “Do you disbelieve in the One Who created you from dust, then ˹developed you˺ from a sperm-drop, then formed you into a man? (The Clear Quran, Dr. Mustafa Khattab [1])
  2. And his friend answered him in the course of their argument: "Wilt thou blaspheme against Him who has created thee out of dust,FN44 and then out of a drop of sperm, and in the end has fashioned thee into a [complete] man? FN44 See second half of note FN47 on 3:59, and note FN4 of 23:12. --Asad [2]
  3. His companion said to him, in the course of the argument with him: "Dost thou deny Him Who created thee out of dust, then out of a sperm-drop, then fashioned thee into a man? FN2379 Three stages of man's creation: first dust, or clay, itself created out of nothing and forming the physical basis for his body; then, out of the produce of the earth as incorporated in the parent's body, the sperm drop (with the corresponding receptive element); and then when the different elements were mixed in due proportion, and the soul was breathed into him, the fashioned man. (Cf. 15:28-29, 30:20, 35:11, and 87:2). --Yusuf Ali [3]

  1. In addition,
  2. the Prophet (SAWS) legislated emotional attention and care for the child by being dutiful and merciful to him, by playing with him and making him happy. Omar Ibnul-Khattab once said, ―Amongst the trees, there is a tree, the leaves of which do not fall and is like a Muslim. Tell me the name of that tree.‖ Everybody started thinking about the trees of the desert areas. And I thought of the date-palm tree. The others then asked, ―Please inform us what that tree is, O Allah's Apostle?‖ He replied, ―It is the date-palm tree.‖86 Omar then told his father what he thought and his father said, ―Had you said what was in your mind this would have been more beloved to me than having so-and-so.‖ This is how we should educate our children about the Islamic values that govern the society. We should educate them gradually so they can be prepared for the information that they will digest and live with their whole lives. Nothing is better than the words of a boy87 who was brought up at the hands of the Prophet (SAWS) and let this be the closing story for this topic. This boy said, ―I was a boy under the care of Allah‘s Apostle and my hand used to go around the dish while I was eating. So Allah's Apostle said to me, ‗O boy! Mention the Name of Allah and eat with your right hand, and eat of the dish what is nearer to you.‘ Since then I have applied those instructions when eating.‖88 So here is our beloved Prophet (SAWS) teaching and educating the children who later became the men who carried the highest and most noble morals.
